TG - How to Configure the VNC property of the NA5

Modified on Fri, 7 Feb at 9:54 AM

Purpose

This guide explains the method to configure the VNC property on the NA5 HMI Series.

Problem Explanation/Objective

The VNC (Virtual Network Computing) implements a remote desktop to allow remote control of a computer located on a network.

You must enable the server functionality on the HMI to control. You can start the client software on the computer from which to perform remote control, connect to the HMI, and then control it remotely.

Supported devices

  • Sysmac Studio V1.54. or higher
  • NA5 HMI series Runtime V1.02 or higher
  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 OS

Requirements

  • Sysmac Studio
  • NA5 HMI
  • VNC Viewer

Procedure

Step 1: Under Configurations and Setup -> HMI Settings -> TCP/IP set the IP address of the Omron NA5 HMI and define the IP address to use.

Note that the default gateway IP address (The IP address of the modem) is necessary if a remote connection via modem is required.

For connection via a modem, the IP address of the OMRON NA5 HMI must be port forwarded to port 5900. The example below shows the Port Forward settings for a Huawei Modem:

Step 2: Enable the VNC server on the HMI under Configurations and Setup -> HMI settings -> VNC and select Use. By default, the port number for many VNC servers is 5900.

Step 3: Transfer the HMI settings while online with the HMI. From the top menu, select HMI -> Synchronization -> NA Device. A window will pop up showing differences, To apply the changes click on Transfer to Device.

Step 4: Download any free VNC Client software. This example uses VNC Viewer from RealVNC. It can be downloaded from here: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/viewer/

Once the VNC viewer is installed, run the application. For local network connection: Type in the IP address of the NA5 device, for example, 192.168.250.2

For remote network connection via modem: Type in the IP address or dynamic DNS URL of the modem.

Note a warning window will pop up indicating the VNC server is not encrypted. Click continue to confirm.

An authentication window asking for the VNC server password will pop up. Enter the set password for the VNC server in the Step 2 and then click Ok.

VNC Viewer will display the same screen as the NA5. Depending on the settings of Step 2, if View and Operate were set, it would allow remote operation using the PC. Test by pressing all the objects available on the HMI.
